Congratulation to the winners of the annual Pine Needlers Quilt Show held on September 1, 2018 at the Capps Gym in Heber! The non-juried event allows all attendees to vote for their favorite quilts, which can be a very hard job as there were over eighty quilts from which to choose.
- First place ribbon went to Karen Kramer for her quilt, “Mile Post 23 Grand Canyon”
- Second place was awarded to Kaye Parch for “Lovebird Lane”
- Third place went to Cynde Hamilton for “Heart and Roses”
- Honorable Mentions were awarded to Brenda Clark for “Autumn Harvest” and to Kaye Parch for “Kaye’s Purple Passion”
Karen Kramer’s first place winning quilt was a quilt created from a photograph of the Grand Canyon. She did an amazing job with all of her colors and shapes as it was a perfect replica of the photo. All of the entries were beautiful – the quilters spent many hours bringing their ideas to fruition as they patch colors and patterns together somehow ending up with their finished creations.
Congratulations to Overgaard resident and Pine Needler member, Carol Stewart, for her acceptance into the Arizona Quilters Hall of Fame! Way to go Carol!
The Best of the Rim Boutique was as large this year as I’ve ever seen it. It spanned the entire length of the Capps Gym, and it was very popular as the attendees were like bees on a beehive picking up craft projects and kits for gifts or to make! There were also several vendors selling their quilter tools and gadgets, t-shirts, and original craft works. The Pine Needlers had their Kid’s corner where children could give some basic quilting a try and enter to win their own quilt.
One quilt I’d like to mention submitted by Pat Amon was all done by hand – hand pieced and hand quilted. Pat named it “Cathedral Windows” and took her three and a half years to complete the king-size bed quilt.
This year’s Raffle Quilt is “Rim Country Cabin” and is an original design, pieced by several of the Pine Needlers members and quilted by member Marilyn Giblin. The last display is at the Rim Country Roundup in Payson. Tickets sell for $1 each or six for $5. The drawing for the winning ticket will be in the afternoon of October 13th and the winner will be notified by phone.
Some of the organizations and activities supported through the money raised are Safe House, Hope House, Santa’s Kids, the School Nurse’s needs, Community Food pantry, the Senior Center and the Chamber’s Fireworks Fund. The Pine Needlers also make quilts all year which are donated to veterans as well as children entering the Foster care system in Navajo County.
Thank you Pine Needlers for a great event once again and for all your hard work the year round! The Pine Needlers meet the first Monday of every month at Faith Lutheran Church, 2750 Mogollon Drive, in Overgaard. For more information about the group, visit: www.pineneedlers.weebly.com.
