-THE LADY MUSTANGS TAKE GOPHER GET DOWN TOURNAMENT IN FLORENCE-
MOGOLLON MUSTANG GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: The Lady Mustangs on Oct. 18 traveled to Florence for the Gopher Get Down Tournament. The Lady Mustangs were about to face competition they haven’t seen during the season against teams from the 3a, 4a, and 5a divisions. While the Lady Mustangs (1a) in the first round took on Hayden (1a) and defeated them 25-13, 25-15. Their second match came up against the Poston Butte Broncos (4a,#23), and defeated the Broncos 18-25,25-20,15-10. Once they defeated the Broncos their next team to take on, was Combs Coyotes (4a,#24). As they did their prior victims they defeated the Coyotes 25-9, and 25-14. Staring the tournament on a roll they took on the host Florence Gophers and stumbled. They were defeated 25-18,25-27,7-15 for their first loss. Next to come their way was undefeated 1a St. David (17-0) Tigers. Both matches were close with the scores being 25-21, and 25-21. The Lady Mustangs beating the Lady Tigers. The next day Oct. 19 the Lady Mustangs opened the day by taking on the Show Low Cougars (3a, #12). Down the Lady Cougars went, for the Lady Mustangs defeated the Lady Cougars 25-21 and 25-22. Next up for the Lady Mustangs was Flowing Wells Cabelleros (5a,#26). As the popular Queen song went “Another one down, another one bites the dust”. The Cabelleros were defeated 25-14 and 26-24. Heading towards the end of the tournament they once again had to face the Show Low Lady Cougars (3a, #12). Once again, the Lady Cougars fell to the Lady Mustangs, 25-17 and 25-20. Then came the championship round and the Lady Mustangs had backs up against the wall for they would have to win two games (4 sets) against a team that had 0 losses. That team would be the Florence Gophers (3a, #19), the one team that defeated the Lady Mustangs, in close sets, earlier in the competition the day before. But that was the day prior and a new day has dawned. All Florence had to do is win the two sets and it would be over for the Lady Mustangs. The first set the Gophers took 20-25. The Lady Mustangs could’ve given up but fought back to take the second set, 25-19, and continued to take the third set 15-7. Now with each team having a loss it came down to whom ever could win two sets. In the second game the Lady Mustangs dug themselves a hole by losing the first set 18-25. The Lady Mustangs now must win two sets on the other hand the Gophers found themselves one set away from the championship of the tournament. Second set the Lady Mustangs battled and took the set 25-13. Now it came to the final set of the tournament. In the third set a team only had to get to 15 instead of 25 to win. The Lady Mustangs not letting anybody stand in their way, prevailed with a 15-7 championship victory. The Lady Mustangs went 9-1 in the tournament while facing one 5a team, two 4a teams, two 3a teams ( had to play Show Low twice and Florence three times) and two 2a teams. How amazing are these girls by taking on and defeating the bigger schools from across, the State. Congratulations Lady Mustangs and good luck in the State Tournament. Back to Back State Trophies.
-THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX STADIUM-
The Arizona Cardinals come into the game riding an eight – game win streak against the San Francisco 49’ers. The 49’ers are the only NFC team still undefeated. Thanks part in their #1 Defense in total yards per game with 224.4 per game. They also are ranked #2 in points (11.0). The 49ers offense at #3 with points scored per game with 29.6 points per game. The 49ers are going as 10 point road favorites with an over-under total points of 43 points. An upset win by the Cardinals would definitely give them respect around the league considering that their three wins were against the weaker teams in the NFL.
