There’s something exciting coming to Heber-Overgaard in March and I’m not referring to spring (even though I’m pretty excited to see that!) It’s a program for stress management for service members and veterans of the US Military. Designed by former US Army infantry officer, Eric Walrabenstein, it’s called BOOTSTRAP™ and is an innovative, 10-week program that’s helped thousands worldwide since it was introduced in 2012.
BOOTSTRAP’s™ proprietary three-step Neurological Rebalancing Process moves beyond mere mindfulness and relaxation techniques to deliver empowering insights and practical skills to help anyone live a more fulfilling and productive life.
The program instructor is new Overgaard resident Pat Huish, Ph.D. She’s a certified BOOTSTRAP™ instructor as well as a retired psychologist who moved from Phoenix to Heber-Overgaard last July with husband Gary. “We had been looking to downsize for our retirement,” Dr. Pat told me, “But just hadn’t found any place that felt right until we came up here.”
The BOOTSTRAP™ program is something Dr. Pat pursued once she retired. “I wanted to do what I could to help relieve the suffering that plagues so many veterans and active military members,” she told me. Chronic stress is an all too common problem and this offers a solution in a proven, easy-to-use system practiced in the privacy of one’s own home. Here’s some of the symptoms that have been helped:
- anger outbursts
- recurrent memories
- emotional numbness + more
As mentioned, there are 10 classes – once a week for 10 weeks. The class is 1.5 hours long with homework to be practiced by the participant that takes less than an hour a day. BOOTSTRAP™ is not just yoga, but is a system that incorporates the workings of the human mind-body relationship and neurology to calm your mind, increase your vitality, transform your relationships and boost your enthusiasm for life. Although the class is free, in order to be successful it does require your commitment.
The homework consists of videos that teach methods to recognize stress induced symptoms and to become aware of unconscious mental habits and their effects on your life. It also teaches you a different way to relate to your situation and manage your thoughts along with simple exercises to help calm the body and mind.
The three-pronged BOOTSTRAP™ approach is:
BOOTSRAP™ is being offered at no cost to all veterans and active military. To sign up click HERE and register. On this page you will need to add that your instructor is Pat Huish. The classes will be held each Saturday beginning March 18th at 1:00 p.m. at Serenity Yoga at 2935 Hwy 260, Overgaard. You’ll want to wear comfortable clothes. If you have questions call 602-502-7441. There’s also quite a bit of information on their website bootstrapusa.com.
As a side note, Dr. Pat, who is a hatha yoga instructor, is teaching an Intro to Yoga class for anyone on Mondays at 10:30 a.m. at Serenity Yoga. It is an ongoing free class consisting of four basic classes that repeat each month.
Thank you Dr. Pat for volunteering your time and knowledge to help our patriots and also to Al DeVito, owner of Serenity Yoga, for allowing the use of his facility for this worthy cause. I really hope all veterans and active military will take advantage of this opportunity to possibly improve your life and that of those you love.
